With evermore cheaper Machines on the Market, you would think that this question answers itself, but in reality things are not quite so clear. Vaxlynx Rentals which operate as the Rental Wing of The Appliance Service Centre has built up an enviable reputation for their ‘pay-monthly’ rental round which operates throughout the West Midlands.
Wasn’t Renting a thing of the Past? During the 1950s & 1960s many people could not afford household appliances so renting a TV Set, Washing Machine or a Cooker was quite the norm. The ‘rent collector’ would call and collect his weekly cash payment usually on a specific day of the week - in fact, a household of that time usually had many callers. The Milkman, The Coalman, The ‘Pop-man’, The Pools man (betting), The Breadman and the ‘Beer at home’ man.
The household appliances of the day were literally built like ‘tanks’ and lasted just as long. They were built to last and were aimed at the rich who had the funds to buy these new fangled appliances. However, as the younger generation gained meaningful employment there suddenly became a situation where there was a young vibrant market willing to buy. And with improvements in manufacture, cheaper goods flooded the market. It’s the same today, but there is unfortunately, one big difference. As the price of the machine gets ever cheaper to buy new, the quality associated with your new purchase means that you could be faced with purchasing a new machine every 5-7 years - and that does not take into account any repairs undertaken during that time. Unfortunately modern appliances seem to have lifespan pre-built in.
Today’s Machine Quality makes Rentals a Viable Option. Just to put a little perspective here, it would seem that the biggest culprits do tend to be the cheaper option machines as they have been specifically built to a lower cost/standard.
At the higher end you can still find machines that embody those values of former times, the problem is most of us have to set our sights much lower.
This means jumping on the treadmill of constantly changing machines, so lets look at how a rental machine might benefit you:

So that’s the rental side of things, how does a purchased machine compare?
Well to start with you have to be able to pay that upfront cost, and unless buying second hand or considering HP, you'll be looking at a figure around £350 - £400 for something fairly decent. Admittedly you gain the prestige of owning new, but as with most things that soon disappears. And that £400 could even become a bigger figure if you have to factor in a couple of repairs.
As it is, your £400 represents over 30 Rental payments (based on £13.00 month) - that’s 2.5 years of Renting with all it’s associated benefits. A word of caution here though as not all rental companies are the same, many High Street purveyors of appliances look on the surface to offer something similar to Renting, but in reality they just want to sign you up to insurance laden policies that tie you in to aggressive repayment percentages.
